Applying for a permission for early or postponed start of basic education

Beginning school in the age of 6 or 8 requires that the child is granted a permission to begin basic education one year earlier or later than enacted. The guardians must fill in the form Application for exceptional start of basic education(docx, 41 Kt) and attach a professional (a psychologist's or a physician's/doctor's) statement to it as an appendix.

The application form and the statement is mailed to the following address: Finnish Education Unit, Head of Psychologist Services Jonna Kari, P.O. Box 31, 02070 City of Espoo. Application documents have to be mailed so that they arrive latest by February 13th 2020.


Starting school at age 6

Enrolling in the first grade of comprehensive school takes place between January 8th–20st 2020 through the electronic Wilma-service. Please contact the Finnish Education Unit, tel. p. 040 5070 817, to receive a key code to create a personal Wilma account.

Submit the application form Application for exceptional start of basic education and the statement by February 13h 2020 at the latest to the following address: Finnish Education Unit, Head of Psychologist Services Jonna Kari, P.O. Box 31, 02070 City of Espoo. If your child is applying to other than the local school, please submit a copy of the statement to the principal of the school in question one day before the entrance examination.

Please note! Starting school at age 6 requires that your child has received permission to start primary education a year earlier than is required by law. The decision on granting the permission is made by the head of psychology services Jonna Kari.
